SCAA’s leadership on the world wide coffee stage has been based largely on creating, promoting, and adhering to standards. I believe this is one of the most important things we do but we must continue to develop, publish and then teach standards if we are play a leadership role. And we must use the standards we create in everything we do and they must be consistent throughout the committees and guilds.
I believe it is time to begin setting up formal SCAA education throughout the country and even globally. Sooner rather than later we should begin evaluating what it will take. We know it will take money and I think we should all be prepared. There will be a cost to taking deliberate and methodical steps toward spreading SCAA standards, and it will require some shifts in our thinking. For example, it is time we begin to pay instructors who are teaching core SCAA standards on behalf of SCAA and improving the industry for everyone. This will require an auditing system so decision about instructors are based on objective evaluations rather than reputation or assumptions.
